The Rotary Club of Lilongwe on Saturday gave an early Christmas treat to six orphanages in the capital city where they also donated various items worth K2 million (about $5 000).

The club visited Green Olive, Tikondane, Children of the Nation, Rainbow, Crisis Nursery and Mzando orphanages.

Rotarian Clement Chilingulo, who led the team that visited Children of the Nation Orphanage, said it is the club’s tradition to contribute something to the less privileged every festive season.

“We always share something with orphans during this festive season when we are celebrating the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. These orphans need cheering up and we want them to know that despite their situation, people care for them. At the same time, we are encouraging them,” said Chilingulo who is also executive secretary of Press Trust.

He thanked Children of the Nation management for caring for the orphans.

“This is a calling just like that of doctors, nurses or church ministers. You are doing a great job and we thank you. Continue to give them care so that they should feel appreciated and attain their dreams,” said Chilingulo.

Children of the Nation country director Lilian Khofi thanked the Rotary Club for the treat.

“You have been a great partner for many years. Through this donation, you have helped us save a lot of money which will be used on other causes. Every year, you are there for us and we do not take this for granted. May God continue to bless you so that you can reach many other children,” said Khofi.

The orphanage caters for 1 500 children, providing food, accommodation education and health care.
